Dr C. Dresser Attributed for Kenrick – Aesthetic Movement Cast Iron Corner Shelf
£2,800
An Aesthetic Movement cast iron corner shelf, attributed to Dr Christopher Dresser for Kenrick Iron Works, with stylised floral and leaf ornament and twin display tiers.
This Aesthetic Movement corner wall shelf, attributed to Dr Christopher Dresser for Kenrick Iron Works, is a rare survival of British cast-iron design from the later nineteenth century. Designed circa 1870, it embodies Dresser’s distinctive synthesis of botanical form and geometric order.
Cast in iron with a finely pierced structure, the shelf features stylised floral and leaf decoration, arranged in symmetrical reliefs that merge structural support with ornament. The twin shelves are framed by scalloped edges and supported by openwork panels incorporating circular rosettes and linear patterning, all executed with remarkable precision for a commercial foundry product.
Underneath the upper shelf is a diamond registration mark dating between c.1868 and c.1883, the final letter being a partially obscured “C,” identifying a date close to 1870. Dresser’s collaboration with firms such as Kenrick brought industrial art into domestic life, translating the principles of the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890) into accessible decorative ironwork.
