Bruce James Talbert Attributed – Gothic Revival Oak Wall Hanging Bookcase
£2,400
This wall hanging bookcase in oak sits within the Gothic Revival (c.1830–1900), c.1880, British, and is attributed to Bruce James Talbert. The case is planned as a shallow architectural frame with a shaped cresting, narrow uprights and a grid of small compartments arranged around a central cupboard. Proportion and panelling do the work, the carcass reading as a disciplined façade intended to hang above a desk or settle.
At the centre, a small door is inset with a printed image of Adam and Eve after Albrecht Dürer, the panel framed by simple mouldings so the picture becomes a quiet focus within the rectilinear scheme. The lower rail projects to form a narrow ledge, while the flanking shelves provide ordered storage for books and small objects. The composition aligns with Talbert’s domestic vocabulary of panel divisions and measured ornament current in late nineteenth-century Gothic Revival interiors.
