E. W. Godwin Attributed, Probably Made by William Watt, Walnut Two Tier Table

Price on Application

This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.

Attributed to E. W. Godwin, probably made by William Watt, this walnut double tier table aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (c.1860 to 1900), c.1880.

The table is arranged with an extended square top above a lower square shelf, carried on four turned uprights with ring incised collars and fine tapering legs. The top has deep chamfered edges, visually thinning the upper plane and giving the piece a finer, lighter profile. See: The Secular Furniture of E. W. Godwin by Susan Weber Soros, page 161, illustration 227.

The turned details below and the extended lower shelf relate to designs for similar tables by Godwin. See: The Secular Furniture of E. W. Godwin by Susan Weber Soros, page 156, illustrations 221 and 222.

The restrained open form, square tiers and controlled turning connect the table with Godwin’s furniture for William Watt, where plain surfaces are set against carefully reduced supports and lightened architectural profiles.
