Bedroom or side chair in oak, in the style of E. W. Godwin and aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1877.
An Aesthetic Movement oak bedroom or side chair with ball knop finials on tapering conical necks and three short turned spindle supports set beneath the upper back rail. Below this, the open ladder-back is formed from multiple slightly bowed horizontal rails, giving the chair a light, elongated structure.
The rear legs sweep outward in an exaggerated curve below the seat before continuing upward into the rounded turned back uprights. Just above the original rush seat is a subtle turned detail, marking the transition between the seat frame and back structure. The back legs are united to the front legs by six shaped stretchers, creating a clear linear frame beneath the seat.
This chair has a close relationship to E. W. Godwin’s side chairs designed for William Watt.
