E. W. Godwin, Style of – Aesthetic Movement Walnut Octagonal Table
£4,500
In the style of E. W. Godwin, a walnut octagonal table aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1880. The form follows Godwin’s characteristic use of architectural lightness, geometric clarity and repeated turning details.
The octagonal top sits above a series of shallow arched aprons. Eight fine ring turned legs descend to original concealed brass castors, the upper legs joined by an all-around stretcher line that sits directly below the aprons. A lower cross stretcher continues the vertical rhythm of the legs and is fixed with pegged joints, giving the table a stable but visually open structure. The proportions allow it to function either as a centre table or as a side table.
We have a third version of this model that retains its original maker’s label reading S. E. and R. Johnson, Warrington, Cabinet Makers, Established 1837.
