E. W. Godwin Style, Aesthetic Movement Walnut Octagonal Centre Table
Price on Application
This item is price on application due to its rarity and importance.
Attributed to E. W. Godwin, this walnut octagonal centre table aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (circa 1860 to circa 1890), c.1880. The table has an octagonal top with moulded tramline edges, raised on four turned legs.
The under-frame is open and structured, with high stretchers uniting to ball details with tramline decoration which follows through to and around the stretchers. The legs taper towards the floor with lower bulbous turnings and finish on Thebes style feet, reminiscent of Godwin’s Anglo-Japanese coffee table designs.
The ball and bulbous turnings to the upper and lower legs are also reminiscent of Godwin’s eight-leg spider tables. See Susan Weber Soros, The Secular Furniture of E. W. Godwin, p.151 and p.167, illustrations 215 and 240.*
