Shapland & Petter – Arts and Crafts Oak Planter with Copper Panels
£850
By Shapland and Petter, oak planter aligned to the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1900. The square form stands on four straight legs joined by low rectangular stretchers, with each face framed in quarter-sawn oak and inset with repoussé copper sheets worked with heart motifs. The framework is constructed with pegged mortise-and-tenon joints typical of Barnstaple workshop production.
A closely related design titled Plant Holders 1867 is held in the Barnstaple and North Devon Museum’s eHive collection (object no. 3574). The archival photograph shows an identical arrangement of repoussé copper heart panels within a similar oak surround
The combination of copper and oak expresses the Arts and Crafts ideal of material truth and simplicity of form. The crisp joinery, square proportions, and refined panelwork illustrate the precision and restraint characteristic of Shapland and Petter’s domestic furniture.
Condition is consistent with age, showing a gentle patina to both wood and metal surfaces. A fine example of regional English cabinetmaking from one of the movement’s most recognisable workshops.
