By Thomas Jeckyll for Barnard, Bishop & Barnards of Norwich, a fire insert in cast iron, Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1878, British, Victorian. Rectangular surround with a tall arched opening, the arch and uprights worked with ribbed grounds and alternating circular floral roundels.
The spandrels are cast in relief with birds of paradise set amongst chrysanthemums and cherry blossom, with daisy panels to the lower sides. The upper roundel incorporates the maker’s bee device associated with Barnard, Bishop & Barnards, and the surface retains touches of original gilding with a subtle bronzed effect across the darker ground. Bearing registration marks including BT 48/44 and registered design no. 329036, registered in November 1878.
