William Birch. A Walnut Side Chair with Re-rushed Seat

£500

An Arts and Crafts side chair made by William Birch (active c.1890–1910) of High Wycombe, constructed in solid walnut and newly re-rushed to the original pattern. The back is arranged with a framed ladder of narrow rails above a broad intermediate stretcher, giving a light, rectilinear outline typical of Birch’s workshop production for progressive late-Victorian interiors. The turned front legs rise to a squared seat frame and are braced by multiple stretchers that reinforce the slim uprights while keeping the silhouette open. The close-nailed rush seat restores the chair’s intended texture and comfort, its pale tone contrasting with the warm walnut. The honest joinery, restrained outline and emphasis on material character align with the Arts and Crafts ethos that defined Wycombe chairmaking at the turn of the twentieth century.
