WMF. Art Nouveau Silver-plated Centerpiece with Whiplash Handles & Glass Liner
£650
Produced by WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) around 1900, this Art Nouveau silver-plated centerpiece combines organic form with functional design. The bowl is set with its original green glass liner, the scalloped rim and pressed foliate motifs contrasting with the engraved decoration of the silver plate. The flared base rises into a pair of sweeping whiplash handles, a hallmark of Jugendstil metalwork.
WMF was the leading German manufacturer of Art Nouveau domestic wares, exporting widely across Europe. Their work exemplified the movement’s preference for flowing lines, natural motifs, and modern production techniques, qualities clearly expressed in this finely balanced centerpiece.
