Cantagalli – Italian Porcelain Copper Lustre Table Lamp
£1,500
This Italian porcelain copper lustre table lamp by Cantagalli began life as a twin-handled vase, produced around 1880 in Florence during the revival of Italian Renaissance ceramic traditions. The body is richly decorated in iron-red and gilt arabesque motifs on a lustrous ground, the scrolling handles and baluster neck demonstrating the sculptural precision for which the Cantagalli workshop was known.
The design reflects the Italian Renaissance Revival style that characterised Cantagalli’s late nineteenth-century output, fusing historical reference with modern craftsmanship. The lustre technique, derived from Hispano-Moresque pottery, creates a metallic sheen that enhances the sculptural form and illuminates the intricate patterning beneath.
Later adapted for use as a table lamp, the piece retains the essence of its original design, a synthesis of art, history, and function that defines the period’s fascination with decorative reinterpretation.
