W. A. S. Benson, Copper and Brass Table Oil Lamp with Removable Font
£1,200
A copper and brass table oil lamp by W. A. S. Benson (1854–1924), expressing the firm’s characteristic blend of elegant line and practical engineering within the Arts and Crafts tradition. The lamp comprises a spherical copper font secured within a brass cradle, topped by a pierced brass burner and gallery. Three sinuous uprights rise from a well-balanced tripod base with scrolling terminals, meeting at a knopped central junction that provides both stiffness and visual rhythm. The removable font allows easy filling and maintenance, while the contrasting metals emphasise the clarity of the construction. Benson’s lighting privileged graceful curves generated from functional parts, and this model illustrates his approach in which structure, ornament and utility are resolved as a single, coherent design.
