By Daniel Cottier, attributed, an Aesthetic Movement side chair in ebonised wood, aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890), c.1875, British, Victorian. Upright, architectural form with turned finials, square then turned uprights, and a carved head rail worked with sunflower florets and foliate scrollwork.
The padded leather back panel is secured with studding within a moulded frame, flanked by shaped inner returns, with an arched back rail and small turned spindles below. The seat is similarly upholstered and studded, raised on ring turned front legs with brass castors, the rear legs raked, united by turned stretchers. The attribution is supported by the distinctive sunflower carving and the back construction, which corresponds closely to a chair shown in an interior photograph of the drawing room at Kepplestone House, Aberdeen, decorated and furnished by Cottier, c.1875, reproduced on the back cover of Daniel Cottier, Designer Decorator Dealer.
