Liberty and Co (Attributed) – Arts and Crafts Pewter Mirror with Ruskin Jewels
£3,500
Mirror in hammered pewter, attributed to Liberty and Co, from the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910), c.1900. The oblong frame is boldly proportioned with canted corners, the surface hand-hammered to a subtly undulating texture. Four inset turquoise Ruskin jewels mark the cardinal points, their square forms framed in shallow pewter bezels to emphasise the unity of metal and ceramic craft.
The design aligns with Liberty and Co’s distinctive range of Arts and Crafts domestic furnishings, combining simple geometric form with the natural shimmer of hand-worked pewter. The integration of coloured Ruskin pottery inserts expresses the collaborative spirit between Liberty’s metalworkers and contemporary studio potters in Birmingham and the Lake District, particularly within the circle of William Richard Lethaby and Archibald Knox. This mirror represents the refined domestic metalwork for which Liberty and Co became internationally recognised at the turn of the century.
