Made by William Birch for Liberty & Co. – Arts and Crafts Beech Child’s Chair
£550
This Arts and Crafts beech child’s chair by William Birch for Liberty & Co. was produced around 1900 and demonstrates the unity of form and craft that defined the Arts and Crafts movement (1880–1910). The ebonised frame, with lattice back and square legs, supports a hand-rushed seat of traditional weave, its geometry both functional and decorative.
The design belongs to the British vernacular tradition that Liberty championed, modest in ornament yet expressive in proportion and material truth. Birch’s High Wycombe workshop produced furniture for Liberty’s catalogue, translating the ideals of Morris and the Guild of Handicraft into accessible domestic forms.
