M. H. Baillie Scott – Arts and Crafts Ebonised Oak Armchair with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay
POA
By Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott, an Arts and Crafts ebonised oak armchair, c.1903–1905. Architectural, high-back form with slab sides and broad, cantilevered arms. The back is centred by a nailed leather panel, with a stylised interlocking-oval motif above, inlaid and centred by a mother-of-pearl roundel. The seat is similarly upholstered with a nailed leather border framing a patterned textile panel.
Baillie Scott’s use of dark finishes and mother-of-pearl inlay is well documented in comparable early 1900s seating, including an armchair made by the Dresdener Werkstätten for the 1903–1904 Dresden Werkstätten Exhibition, and the related ceremonial chair type held by the Musée d’Orsay, where mother-of-pearl back inlay is described as a signature feature used across his models.
