Royal Doulton Signed M. B. For Mary Butter. An Arts & Crafts Flowing Floral Blue Vase
£950
A Royal Doulton stoneware vase signed M. B. for Mary Butter, with Arts and Crafts flowing floral decoration in tonal blue and brown glazes, c. 1910.
This stoneware vase by Royal Doulton, signed M. B. for Mary Butter, represents the expressive refinement of the Arts and Crafts movement (1880 – 1910) as developed within the firm’s Lambeth studio. Its tapering cylindrical body rises to a narrow rim, the surface decorated with flowing floral motifs in incised relief, outlined in light slip and filled with tonal blue and brown glazes.
Mary Butter was among the skilled decorators active under Frank Butler’s direction in the early twentieth century. Her work demonstrates rhythmic naturalism and disciplined symmetry, evident in the sinuous tendrils that encircle this form.
The glaze remains even and lustrous, with no structural losses observed. Signed on the base with M. B. and impressed Royal Doulton marks.
