Cotswold School – Arts and Crafts Wrought Iron Pricket Candlestick (c.1910)
£550
Wrought iron candlestick, Cotswold School, c.1910, hand-forged on three pad feet with a shallow pricket dish and tapered shaft.
This wrought iron candlestick, made within the Cotswold School circle c.1910, embodies the disciplined craftsmanship and simplicity associated with the later Arts and Crafts movement. The form is slender and architectural, consisting of a tapered shaft rising to a shallow pricket dish and supported by three outward-curving pad feet.
Each element shows the evidence of hand-forging, the irregular hammering and subtle asymmetry that give life to the metal surface. The shaft is divided by two collars, each swelling gently from the flattened sides, while the feet curl downward in balanced arcs. The candlestick stands firmly, its stability ensured by the spread of the base rather than added weight.
This restrained approach reflects the Cotswold School’s adherence to function and integrity of material, a continuation of the ideals established by Ashbee and Gimson.
