Arthur J. Seward – Arts and Crafts Hammered Electro-Plated Double Inkstand

£440

This Arts and Crafts electro-plated double inkstand by Arthur J. Seward of Birmingham dates to around 1900. Made in hammered and riveted metal with twin wells and a hinged lid, it captures the industrial craftsmanship of Birmingham’s metalworking tradition.

The exposed rivets and planished surface express the British industrial Arts and Crafts metalwork style, honest, functional, and finely made. Seward’s stamped mark confirms his connection to the city’s community of artisans influenced by the Guild of Handicraft and the Birmingham School of Art.
