J & F Pool – Arts and Crafts Hammered Copper Picture Frame with Writhen Stand
£650
This picture frame in copper sits within the Arts and Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1900, Cornish, by J and F Pool of Hayle. The front plate is planished all over so the surface catches light, the outline cut to a lively silhouette with soft lobes at the corners. A plain inner aperture is held by copper clips, the metal swelling gently around the window to give depth and shadow.
Made from sheet copper, raised and hammered so the skin has life. The aperture is secured with small copper clips and screws that keep the plate tight without fuss. At the back a writhen rear stand sets the display angle and ends in a looped foot that echoes the curves on the front. The result is graphic and material led, the warm oxide of the copper reading clearly on a mantel or shelf, a domestic statement from a Cornish workshop around 1900.
