Pilkington’s Tile Works – Arts & Crafts Ceramic Galleon Tile
£650
This tile in ceramic sits within the Arts & Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1900, English, made by Pilkington’s Tile Works. The panel shows a galleon in full sail on a turquoise sea, the drawing strong and graphic with dark outlining and warm ochre sails. The image is presented within a plain timber frame that keeps the focus on the maritime scene and protects the tile for hanging display.
The composition reads clearly at a distance, the ship set against bands of sea and sky with crisp contouring typical of decorative tiles of the period. Colour is used economically to emphasise form and movement rather than fine shading, giving the tile presence on a narrow wall or within a group of Arts and Crafts ceramics.
