A Pair of Small Vaseline Shade
POA
This pair of Vaseline glass shades from the Arts and Crafts movement 1880–1910 combines natural form with early twentieth-century glassmaking innovation. Each shade is hand-moulded with petal-shaped rims and subtle leaf relief, the opalescent Vaseline tone shifting from pale yellow to blue when illuminated.
The Vaseline effect, achieved through trace uranium content, was admired for its luminous depth and gentle diffusion of colour. Such shades were typically hung as pendant or wall lights in refined domestic interiors of the period.
