About this piece
A rare pair of ebonized octagonal centre tables, with coromandel tops, inlaid and gilded throughout, attributed to John Moyr Smith for Collinson & Lock. c.1875
These Aesthetic Movement tables (c.1870–1885) exemplify the collaboration between John Moyr Smith (1839–1912) and the London firm Collinson & Lock. Each table is constructed in ebonized wood with coromandel tops, bordered in inlaid satinwood and boxwood, and enriched with incised and gilded decoration.
The octagonal form rests on a cross-shaped base with coromandel tops, with inlaid satinwood and boxwood boarders., incised and gilded decoration. The cross shaped base with incised turned and gilded decoration throughout, a central turned upright unites the four legs which have angled upper side supports. The quartered cross stretchers have subtle half trefoil shapes above, uniting four small turned upright supports to the lower cross section that extends past the four side stretchers which enclose the cross stretchers within a square. The turned legs unite the lower cross section ends and to the sabre shaped feet with incised floral and zig-zag decoration reflecting the refined linear ornament characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement (1860–1890).
ollinson & Lock frequently collaborated with leading designers of the period, including E W Godwin, J M Smith, B Talbert, and C L Eastlake, producing some of the highest quality furniture produced in the late Victorian period.
