About this piece
Set of teapot and two jugs in painted ceramic, c.1875 and attributed to Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co of Cauldon Place, Hanley, Staffordshire, a major Victorian pottery producing high-grade earthenware and porcelain for domestic and export markets.
All three pieces share rounded, slightly tapering bodies on low circular feet, with looped handles modelled as segmented bamboo. The cream ground is decorated with trailing branches bearing small leaves and buds, suspended from fine vertical stems that read almost like hanging scrolls. A black key fret border encircles the rims, tying the composition together and giving the group a clear Aesthetic Japanese character when arranged as a table tea set.
Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co operated the Cauldon Place works from the 1860s into the early twentieth century, exhibiting at major international exhibitions and receiving a gold medal at Paris in 1878 for the quality of their wares.
