Aesthetic Movement Ebonised and Gilded Corner Wall Shelf (c.1880)
£1,400
An Aesthetic Movement ebonised walnut corner wall shelf with carved eagles to each side, gilded anaglypta paper interior, and open upper and lower display tiers.
This Aesthetic Movement wall shelf (c.1880) exemplifies the decorative harmony between naturalistic carving and geometric form that defined the movement (1860–1890). Constructed in ebonised and gilded walnut, the design features an open upper display section enclosed by shaped aprons, each pierced with a circular panel containing a finely carved gilded eagle in profile.
The interior is lined with richly gilded anaglypta paper, its embossed surface forming a vertical pattern reminiscent of woven textile. The contrast between the dark ebonised frame and luminous gold interior heightens the visual depth of the recess, a device often employed by Aesthetic Movement designers to dramatise light and material texture.
A lower shelf, supported by further shaped aprons, completes the composition. The work reflects the period’s fascination with Japanese-influenced asymmetry and the integration of natural motifs within structured domestic ornament.
