Liberty & Co., retailer. A classic pair of Arts and Crafts rush seat oak chairs with a wide curved headrest and attractive wild grain. They have ring-turned legs with ring-turned front stretchers. These timeless designs were unique to William Birch.
A popular model of the day, made in large numbers with many survivals. They were made in High Wycombe near London, which in the late 19th century was the centre of the chair making industry in the U.K.
Each chair is gently knocked apart, its joints cleaned and glued, then reassembled and clamped overnight, then set aside for a few days while the glue fully cures.
They are then cleaned and waxed and sent off to my old-time rush seat specialist who lays new rush, ready for another three or four generations of use.
