Philip Webb for Morris and Co attributed, this fine pair of Sussex side chairs in stained beech aligned to the Aesthetic Movement (c.1860 to c.1900), c.1890.

The chairs follow the Sussex side chair form, with upright backs and the typical row of turned spindles to the back rest. This pair is distinguished by ball finials to the rear posts, giving the upper profile a more decorative finish than the plainer standard Sussex chair.

The seats are upholstered and set within simple square frames. The front legs have incised turned details to the upper sections, with a shaped front stretcher below, adding a more worked and individual front profile. The side and rear stretchers keep the lower frame plain and practical, while the shaped stretcher gives the pair a nice change to the norm.
