This Arts and Crafts electro-plated double inkstand by Arthur J. Seward of Birmingham dates to around 1900. Made in hammered and riveted metal with twin wells and a hinged lid, it captures the industrial craftsmanship of Birmingham’s metalworking tradition.

The exposed rivets and planished surface express the British industrial Arts and Crafts metalwork style: honest, functional, and finely made. Seward’s stamped mark confirms his connection to the city’s community of artisans influenced by the Guild of Handicraft and the Birmingham School of Art.
