Heal’s – Arts and Crafts Oak Armchair with Chamfered Rails and Shaped Seat

£850

This armchair in oak sits within the Arts and Crafts (1880–1910) tradition, c.1930, English, reflecting the movement’s later influence in Heal’s domestic furniture. The frame has a gently arched cresting with twin horizontal rails over three narrow verticals, the arms set low and straight so the profile reads clean and purposeful. Edges are neatly chamfered to soften touch points and emphasise the line of the rails.

Square legs braced by side and front stretchers, seat rails with a shaped drop to the front and a panel built for a comfortable sitting surface. Decoration is limited to the play of rails and chamfers, an approach consistent with Heal’s interwar output, where clarity of outline and well-finished timber stand in for applied ornament.
