E. W. Godwin for William Watt. Anglo-Japanese writing desk

E W Godwin (attributed). An Anglo-Japanese writing desk with upper glazed compartmentalised cupboards with a projecting cornice and wavy stain glass with felt ‘letter retaining folds’ below, flanked by incised and turned spindles with square ends typical of Godwin. A leather writing area with two drawers below and a pair of further drawers to each side a detail he used on his desk for William Watt which also has side drawers. The simple brass ring pull handles with circular back plates are the type Godwin used on other pieces. The front turned legs with simple rounded feet and central projecting supports uniting square details are reminiscent of the chairs he designed for Dromore castle. Height 47 3/4", Width 36", Depth 20 3/4". Circa 1885.
